In furnishing his home, H. F. du Pont exhibited a fondness for the Federal or early classical-revival style. One such example is a trunk with a veneered surface fashioned in Massachusetts around 1800. By the late 1700s, inlaid and veneered surfaces helped to create a more geometric appearance on furniture. The golden rippling grain of birch veneer on this trunk, framed with bands of mahogany, is especially successful.

Hickory Chair Company's artists were inspired by the veneered surface of the Winterthur trunk in the design of this contemporary form. The result is a piece of furniture that is certain to become an important part of today’s living environments that emphasize unparalleled quality and beauty.
