A kettle stand was one of a variety of new furniture forms that appeared in the second half of the 1700s—a time when land owning merchants could afford to build and furnish more fashionable houses. The kettle stand in the Dunlap Room at Winterthur Museum was likely made in New England, where most American kettle stands originated. Hickory Chair designers have retained the pull-out slide, fluted legs, and brass oval post-and-bail handle of the original in this contemporary adaptation of the antique stand.
