In the late eighteenth century, a continued fascination with classical antiquity provided the impetus for the development of neoclassicism. Straight lines and delicate ornament, including inlaid decoration, became the norm. Among the number of innovative forms at the time were a lady's work or sewing table. The double-elliptical shape of a work table in Winterthur's Billiard Room was characteristic of New York pieces. Hickory Chair Company's designers were inspired by the circa 1800 New York work table in the creation of the Biderman Cocktail Table.
